[01] Greek leadership in Alexandria for cathedral's dedication
The newest Orthodox Cathedral in the ancient port city of Alexandria
was dedicated on Sunday during a venerable ecclesiastical service
officiated by Ecumenical Patriarch Vartholomeos and Patriarch of
Alexandria and All Egypt Theodoros, and in the presence of Greek
President Karolos Papoulias.
The ceremony dedicating the Annunciation Cathedral was among the first,
in fact, on Papoulias' itinerary during his official visit to Egypt.
A high-ranking ministerial delegation from Athens was led by Tourism
Development Minister Fani Palli-Petralia, while several main opposition
deputies as well as former prime minister Constantine Mitsotakis
attended the cathedral's dedication. The ceremony was also attended by
several local leaders and representatives of other faiths.
The leadership of the Alexander S. Onassis Foundation, one of the major
benefactors of the effort to open the cathedral, also attended the
ceremony.
