  • [01] Inner Cabinet meeting focuses on foreign affairs issues

The inner Cabinet focused on foreign policy issues on Tuesday, particularly planning for the 4th Community Support Framework (CSF), as the meeting comes a day after Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis met with Economy Minister George Alogoskoufis and Deputy Minister Christos Folias regarding the issue.

Tuesday's meeting was chaired by Karamanlis, while Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis reportedly briefed participants on a wide variety of issues.

Earlier, Alogoskoufis noted that the 20.1 billion euros earmarked for Greece under the 4th CSF comprise a major opportunity for the country's further development.

Comments are expected after Tuesday's meeting at the Maximos Mansion.

[02] Significant changes for universities proposed

An eight-member committee charged with formulating a draft bill for the higher education sector has proposed significant changes, by Greek standards, on the way local universities operate, as the recommendations and proposals were included in an initial report submitted Monday.

One of the changes proposed deals with so-called "professional college students", as it sets a specific number of years for college students to complete their studies. Students will be given a "grace period" of 2-3 years depending on the university they are attending.

The committee also proposes the creation of a "health sciences university", which will include all medical schools, as well as stricter guidelines for professors' attendance. Furthermore, the committee suggests that professors' performance be evaluated by the students themselves.

The committee will submit its final report to the education ministry at the end of April, while the ministry is expected to unveil a draft law regarding universities in June.

Another change, albeit non-academic, would allow students the right to vote directly in student elections, rather than through political party representatives, as is the case now.

[03] Athens condemns Tel Aviv suicide bombing

The Greek foreign ministry on Tuesday harshly condemned the latest attack by a Palestinian suicide bomber in Tel Aviv, saying it was a "terrorist act of blind violence."

"This unacceptable action caused even greater horror as it took place during the Jewish Passover," foreign ministry spokesman George Koumoutsakos said of the attack on Monday, in which nine people were killed and several more injured.

The spokesman also noted that "terrorist attacks like this exacerbate the already extremely sensitive situation in the Middle East and undermine every effort to achieve a peaceful solution to the conflict, which is going through a difficult period in which both sides must display responsibility and self-restraint."
