  • [01] Gov't will stick with plans in education sector, minister says

The government has a programme for the education sector that it will implement, Education Minister Marietta Giannakou said after her meeting with Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis at Maximos Mansion on Thursday.

Her comments were made in response to reporters' questions regarding mobilisations planned by teachers for the month of May.

"Progress is not achieved through conflict, which oftentimes aims at maintaining the status quo," she said.

Asked whether the government is discussing teachers' demands, Giannakou responded that the government is examining all demands.

She noted that during the past two years, many demands have been met, such as the hiring of subsitute teachers, while regarding the issue of school buildings she said that â¬417 million had been allocated for this purpose in 2004 and 2005.

In addition, Giannakou noted that it's not always funding that is a problem in building new schools but finding appropriate land.

[02] Gov't on right track to reduce deficit, FinMin tells PM

Finance Minister George Alogoskoufis appeared optimistic regarding the economy after meeting with Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis on Thursday.

In statements he made after the meeting, Alogoskoufis said that the budget has been satisfactorily implemented during the first quarter of 2006 adding that the goal to reduce the deficit to below 3% of GDP by year-end is also on the right track.

Other areas where progress has also been achieved are reforms, privatizations, talks with public utility company (DEKO) employees as well as implementation of legislation regulating public-private partnerships.
