  • [01] Greece calls for 'greatest possible unity' over Iran

SOFIA (ANA-MPA/F. Karaviti) - The international community needs to achieve the greatest possible unity regarding Iran's nuclear programme, Greek Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis stressed on Friday during a press conference held after the end of an informal meeting of NATO foreign ministers in Sofia.

She said the NATO ministers were agreed that Tehran must not go on to construct nuclear weapons and must avoid statements that isolate the country from the international community, while reiterating that the diplomatic effort was still midway on this issue .

With respect to the Kosovo status talks, Bakoyannis said the Greek position called for achieving an agreed solution. She stressed that Athens supported the efforts of UN Special Representative Martti Ahtisaari and was in favour of implementing the criteria set by the international community.

The Greek minister also commented on the situation in Darfur, Sudan that was discussed by NATO foreign ministers in Sofia, noting that "genocide" was being committed in that area. She stressed the need to make every possible effort in collaboration with the African Union.
