  • [01] Papandreou on Middle East developments

Main opposition Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK) leader George Papandreou, in an interview in Saturday's edition of "O Kosmos tou Ependyti" newspaper, expressed his "deep concern" over developments in the Middle East and added that the international community reacts "tepidly and very cautiously."

He stressed that in his capacity as President of Socialist International (SI), he has taken initiatives "aimed at a ceasefire and the achievement of peace."

He added that "our country's government is absent from these developments."

In his exclusive interview to the newspaper, Papandreou proposed the holding of a regional conference "which will involve and commit all those who have interest" for a way out of the crisis.

He called on Israel and the U.S. "not to adopt the extreme line of pro-war elements which exist in their countries," adding that "because the way we are going, we will have polarisation, permament tension and anything else."

Papandreou assessed that Israel, "cannot in the long-term survive as an islet between hostile populations." He said that "a strong Palestinian state is in the interest of Israel itself."

On the Greek government's stance, Papandreou said that "Greece as a government is absent," adding that "we are obliged to ask of the European Union to take a more intensive position and move."

    [02] Aquarium inaugurated in Crete

The aquarium "Thalassokosmos" (Sea world) was inaugurated in Iraklio, Crete on Saturday by Development Minister Dimitris Sioufas, Merchant Marine Minister Manolis Kefaloyiannis and Deputy Development Minister Yiannis Papathanassiou. Sioufas described the Cretan aquarium as a work "which advertises research, promotes education and projects culture."

He added that it was a work "which is a motivating lever for elevating the region."

In statements after the inauguration, the development minister stressed that the Cretan aquarium "consitutes an acquisition for science, research, Crete and the whole of Greece, and this makes us feel proud."

Sioufas added that "the entire complex constitutes, as of today, a valuable tool for the special scientists who study the sea life of the eastern Mediterranean."

[03] 'Rodos' transports humanitarian aid to Beirut

Another 12,000 foreign nationals and Lebanese refugees were transported from Beirut from Friday night until 9 a.m. Saturday to Cyprus' ports of Larnaca and Limassol. At the same time, the Greek carrier "Rodos" sailed into the port of Beirut on Saturday morning, transporting 14 tonnes of pharmaceutical material from Greece and four tonnes from Cyprus.

The carrier "Rodos" later sailed from the port of Beirut, transporting another 150 non-combatants to Larnaca.

[04] Tourism minister visits Kassos, Karpathos

In the context of her tour of the Dodecanese islands, Tourism Development Minister Fani Palli-Petralia on Saturday visited Kassos and Karpathos where she was briefed by local officials on the problems and the further prospects of tourism development in these islands.

She said that a pilot programme will be implemented in the two islands for the development of alternative forms of tourism in cooperation between the Tourism Development Ministry and local government.

The minister visited Kassos accompanied by Aegean and Island Policy Minister Aristotelis Pavlidis.

She later visited Karpathos where she had a broad meeting with representatives of local government and of local agencies. At the meeting, like in Rhodes on Friday, the minister said that the development of tourism is a priority for the government.
