  • [01] Socialist International urges gender equality

Equality of the sexes is an inseparable part of the Socialist International's political vision for a free and equitable society, the organisation's president, George Papandreou, said on Saturday.

The message was read at the start of an SI global women's congress in the Chilean capital of Santiago before the arrival of Papandreou, leader of the Panhellenic Socialist Movement, to chair a meeting of the organisation's council.

"The course for a just and equal society still has a long way to go, Papandreou noted.

"Women all over the world are the victims of discrimination, violence and abuse, while the main victims in the sex trade, illiteracy, unemployment, and low-paid jobs are three quarters of those who live below the poverty line and who are not represented in decision-making centres," he complained.

Papandreou also recalled Salvador Alliende's presidency of Chile, and its bloody overthrow by General Pinochet.

[02] Party leader sees need for change

The leader of the opposition Coalition of the Left, Movements and Ecology, Alekos Alavanos, said on Saturday that he saw a need for change in the party.

"The Coalition needs change, with new faces, new words and a new way of working," Alavanos told a meeting of the party's central policy committee on the outcome of local elections held in October.

"A good result may turn into a bad result, a slide backwards and disappointment, if there is no good follow-up, and if it is not incorporated into a management rationale," he noted.

The party had gained fresh impetus from a good showing in the race for Athens mayor, Alavanos underlined.

    [03] Economic diplomacy in Germany

Deputy Foreign Minister Euripides Stylianidis, who handles economic diplomacy for the government, will head a business delegation to Munich, Germany on November 6-7.

The members of the delegation, whom Stylianidis met on Saturday in the northern port city of Thessaloniki for a preparatory meeting, represent 30 companies, mainly based in northern Greece, the foreign ministry said in a statement.

The deputy minister will attend a Greek-Bavarian business conference and meet with members of local government.

Greek exports to Bavaria in the first half of 2006 were 225.5 million euros. Of the total, 46% of sales were finished products, and 35% foodstuffs, according to provisional ministry data.

Bavarian exports to to Greece in the same period totalled 609 million euros, with 75% in ready products and 12% in foods, the ministry's northern trade bureau reported.
