Rome (ANA-MPA/L. Hatzikyriakos) -- Greece's health and social solidarity minister Dimitris Avramopoulos was awarded in Rome with the international award Guiseppe Sciacca for 2006.

During an official ceremony at the Palazzo Marini in Rome, Avramopoulos was honoured as "one of the basic protagonists of the (2004) Olympic Games in Athens (of which he was mayor at the time)" and because "due to his actions and the impressive mobilisation of volunteers, contributed to spreading the Olympic spirit and Greek culture".

Hellenic Olympic Committee president Minos Kyriakou was also awarded at the ceremony.

Avramopoulos received the top Premio Assoluto award for 2006 during a ceremony held at the Italian parliament for his contribution to the propagation of Hellenic culture, the Olympic Movement, and for his work as minister of tourism in the past and as minister of health.

Accepting the award, Avramopoulos said that being awarded by an organisatin that has become an establishment in Italy and advanced international understanding, solidarity and volunteerism was an exceptional honour.

"We Greeks have much more to do," Avramopoulos said, in that direction, noting that, with its presence and initiatives, it was contributing towards world-wide solidarity.

The Guiseppe Sciacca awards were established five years ago, and are bestowed on outstanding personalities in the international political scene, in memory of the Italian volunteer who lost his life in 1986.

Last year, the award was presented to Pope Benedict.
