[01] World AIDS Day commemorated in Greece
The international campaign to end AIDS (World AIDS Day) was also
observed in Greece on Friday, with several political and religious
leaders issuing statements on the occasion.
On his part, Archbishop of Athens and All Greece Christodoulos said the
issue of AIDS was primarily one of prevention, while expressing the
Church of Greeceās compassion for sufferers of the deadly virus.
According to reports, 485 new HIV cases were reported in the east
Mediterranean country in 2006, with 50 of those cases declared full
blown AIDS.
Events marking the day were held in Athens and Thessaloniki, with
medical students in the latter handing out pamphlets and
prophylactics.
