  • [01] FM Dora Bakoyannis hopes for reconciliation in Iraq

Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis, referring to the execution of former Iraqi president Saddam Hussein, reminded in a statement on Saturday that "Greece, like all the member-states of the European Union, has abolished the death penalty" and expressed the wish that "it will be the last dramatic moment in the troubled history of Iraq."

The foreign minister called on "the friendly people of Iraq to follow the path of reconciliation and of national consensus", stressing that it is "the only path that can lead to a peaceful, secure and democratic future."

[02] PASOK calls for peaceful and democratic future for Iraq

Main opposition PASOK party spokesman Petros Efthymiou, referring to the execution of former Iraqi president Saddam Hussein, said on Saturday that PASOK "had condemned the dictatorial regime of Saddam Hussein in the past in the most profound way", but stressed at the same time that it is "against the death penalty, just like the European Union, the Socialist International and the European Socialist Party are."

Efthymiou added that PASOK "calls on the international community to turn its attention to the prevention of a new escalation of violence, the safeguarding of a peaceful and democratic future in a sovereign Iraq and to work collectively for security, stability and peace in the Middle East."

[03] KKE criticises Saddam Hussein's execution

The Communist Party of Greece (KKE), commenting on the execution of former Iraqi president Saddam Hussein, said in an announcement on Saturday that "the fate of Saddam Hussein should have been a case for the Iraqi people themselves to decide," adding that "his execution is aimed exclusively at the punishment, division and splitting of the Iraqi people who are resisting."
