[01] Greece backs abolition of death penalty
Athens on Thursday praised an initiative by the Italian government,
within the United Nations framework, to abolish the death penalty
around the world.
Foreign ministry spokesman George Koumoutsakos reminded that "the
European Union has already made a statement in favor of the abolition
of capital punishment during the 61st UN general assembly, proposing
during a first stage the imposition of a moratorium on executions. This
statement was signed by 87 countries, and of course, by Greece and its
European partners."
