  • [01] Papandreou on trip to New Delhi

    Main opposition PASOK party leader and Socialist International President George Papandreou will leave for India on Saturday to address the conference organised by the National Congress Party in New Delhi on January 28-29 on the issue of "Strengthening policies for peace and non-violence. The philosophy of Gandhi in the 21st century."

    The conference, organised on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the creation of the Non-Violence Movement by Mahatma Gandhi, will examine reports by distinguished researchers on issues concerning resolving conflicts and peace, as well as Gandhi's philosophy to combat poverty, strengthen peoples and dialogue between cultures, according to an announcement by the PASOK party.

    During his stay in New Delhi, Papandreou will be meeting, among others, Congress Party President Sonia Gandhi and Indian Foreign Minister Sri Pranab Moukherzi.

    [02] DM Evangelos Meimarakis on visit to Egypt

    Defence Minister Evangelos Meimarakis will leave for Egypt on Sunday on an official visit (accompanied by the president of the Parliamentary Committee of Foreign Affairs and Defence Panos Kammenos), for talks with his Egyptian counterpart Marshal Mohamed Hussein Tantawi.

    The two ministers will be discussing issues concerning defence, technical and military cooperation between the two countries, according to an announcement by the defence ministry.

    In the framework of his visit, the minister will be visiting the Monument of the Fallen Greeks at El Alamein, the Patriarchate of Alexandria and the Library and the Greek Language School for the cadres of Egypt's armed forces and will be having contacts with the Greek community in Cairo and Alexandria.

    [03] Solidarity march for Palestinian people

    A solidarity march for the Palestinian people, organised by the Initiative Committee with the participation of trade unions, municipal movements and leftist organisations, ended without incident at noon on Saturday. The demonstrators, who set out from Eleftheria Square, marched to the U.S. embassy, shouting slogans of solidarity for the Palestinian people, and then reached the Israeli embassy, where they dispersed peacefully.
