[01] Ancient building complex near Voula resortA major building complex dating back to the Classical era (5th-4th century BC) has been found in a plot of land near the southeast Athens coastal resort of Voula, during excavations taking place since 2005.The complex has a square profile and a 25-metre side and was built around a square compound. The large quantity of ceramics found, as well as many coins, lead archaeologists to believe that it was a public facility with extensive business and religious activities. The modern-day municipality of Voula is identified with the ancient municipality of Aixonidon Alon, one of the biggest in Attica prefecture. In another development, works taking place in the northern city of Thessaloniki for the construction of the city's Metro have brought to light the primarily unknown city that had existed during the Ottoman era and elements of the metropolis from the Roman era, almost 20 centuries ago. The remnants of walls, conduits and floors, as well as Roman statuettes and arcades are being uncovered and examined in the framework of an agreement signed in Thessaloniki last July between the culture ministry's secretary general and the president of the "Attiko Metro SA" joint venture that has undertaken the construction of the Metro since last April.
