[01] Athens moving to Champions League beat
An overcast Athens on Tuesday continued to gear up for tomorrow's UEFA
Champions League final between Liverpool and AC Milan, as thousands of
fans were plainly evident on the Greek capital's streets exactly two
years after underdogs Liverpool lifted the trophy in Istanbul against
the same Italian side in one of the greatest finals ever played.
Press conferences and work-outs were on the itinerary for the two
European powerhouses on Tuesday, the day in which the majority of
English and Italian fans are expected to arrive. Moreover, at last
estimate, some 14,000 police officers will be stationed in and around
the Athens Olympic Stadium (OAKA), metro stations, the airport and the
city's centre - the biggest law enforcement mobilisation in the east
Mediterranean country since the 2004 Olympic Games.
Other measures announced this past week include more frequent and
all-night metro and bus services on selected routes, as well as the
cordoning off of the OAKA venue in the north Athens district of
Maroussi.
One indication of the turnout is the fact that Greek police asked hotel
and caf? owners in the city's downtown area to field video walls for
fans left without a ticket for the match.
