[01] FinMin meets with new ESC board
Economy and Finance Minister George Alogoskoufis on Tuesday met with
the newly elected board of the social partner-related Economic and
Social Council to review the body's role, as it was the representative
of many agencies.
Alogoskoufis underlined after a meeting with ESC board president
Christos Polyzogopoulos, a high-ranking main opposition PASOK cadre and
the former head of the GSEE trade union, that they discussed ways to
achieve closer cooperation with the government.
The ESC operates independently from governments and political parties,
the minister said, stressing that it will play a significant role in
major issues associated with the Lisbon decisions, the economy and the
state.
Polyzogopoulos said he briefed Alogoskoufis on the ESC's role and the
initiatives it has undertaken, adding that the council will assume an
important role in the wider region of southeastern Europe, underlining
that Greece must play an important role in the region.
He clarified that the ESC seeks the wider participation of society, in
addition to its current 18 partners, stressing that confrontations will
have no place in ESC initiatives and noting that it was preparing for
new conditions to be formed after the general elections in Greece.
