  • [01] PM Karamanlis confers with FinMin on fires/heatwave damages

Prime minister Costas Karamanlis met Monday morning with national economy and finance minister George Alogoskoufis to discuss economic measures for the relief of citizens who suffered losses and damages from the recent spate of wildfires and last week's scorching heatwave.

Alogoskoufis told reporters after the meeting that the issue of restoration of the damages following the unprecedented magnitude of extreme weather conditions and forest fires were the focus of the discussion.

Asked whether compensation would be paid for the damages, Alogoskoufis said that "we will do everything that is necessary, and everything possible".

The matter will also be discussed at Tuesday's session of the Inner Cabinet.

Karamanlis pledged on Sunday that all the forest expanses ravaged by fire were automatically designated for reforestation. "Where there was forest, it will become forest once again," Karamanlis said, speaking in Ioannina at the pre-Congress of his ruling New Democracy party (ND) on the environment.

Addressing the pre-Congress, Karamanlis said that unprecedentedly high temperatures had been recorded throughout the country the previous week, coupled by an unprecedented number of wildfires, which exceeded 300 nationwide, noting that superhuman efforts were made from the outset "to avoid the worst" and thanking all those who "under very adverse conditions, and even at the risk of their lives, waged and are waging the battle with the flames".

Referring to the major fire on Mt. Parnitha, Karamanlis said that "the wound left by the fire on Parnitha is also a wound on our souls...we must work to make it as it was once again, because the environment is a loan that we owe to our children".

Also, an off-the-agenda debate will be held in parliament on Monday afternoon, at political party leaders' level, on the theme of "Family Budget".

[02] Exhibition of Andre Masson works on Andros

An unprecedented exhibition of 85 works of noted 20th century French painter André Masson opened at the Goulandris Foundation's Modern Art Museum on the northern Cyclades island of Andros on Saturday evening, entitled "André Masson and Ancient Greece".

The exhibited works included oil canvasses, sketches, scale models and theatrical props and sculptures, all on loan from various museums around the world, private collections and the Masson family's collection.

One of the dominant themes revolves around the myths of the Labyrinth and the Minotaur, at the centre of much of the artist's works in the late 19030s.

The exhibition will last until Sept. 30.
