A government amendment allowing the videotaping of demonstrations through use of the traffic surveillance cameras, the new round of talks on the FYROM name issue, the acquisition of 450 Russian-made tanks, the attack on a Greek journalist in Istanbul, and Turkish foreign minister Ali Babacan's private visit to Thrace -- following a two-day official visit to Athens -- during which he urged Muslims of the region to refer to themselves Turks, were the main front-page items in Thursday's dailies.

ADESMEFTOS TYPOS: "End to 'personal data' - The use of (surveillance) cameras on the streets to be regulated through legislation", opining that this will put an end to the 'impunity of criminal elements and murderers of souls', and adding that the names of child molesters and rapists and those who force women and innocent children to prostitution, will finally be made public.

APOGEVMATINI: "450 tanks from Russia - KYSEA (Government Council for Foreign Affairs and Defence) opens up new prospects in Greek-Russian relations", elaborating that the KYSEA decided the acquisition of approximately 450 armoured personnel carrier vehicles, tanks and amphibian BMP-3s from Russia, and two new VIP airplanes, with the simultaneous sale of the existing EMBRAER.

AVGHI: "Cameras everywhere, and at all times - Blatant surveillance at rallies and demonstrations".

AVRIANI: "Historic Karamanlis-Putin agreement shields Greece's defence - Purchase of 450 armoured vehicles from Russia at one-third the price", adding that the purchase of the 450 Russian-made tanks for the Army for 1.2 billion euro constitutes the first act in the materialisation of the new strategic perception in armaments which, in the framework of the decisive developments in Greek-Russian relations and strong cooperation in the energy sector, now acquires the substance of a new dogma on Greece's geopolitical flexibility, with Karamanlis' seal.

CHORA: "New round of discussions on the FYROM name issue, at Karamanlis' urging", adding that, at the prime minister's urging and determination, the Greek efforts for seeking the best possible solution to the name issue are being intesified.

ELEFTHEROS: "Shock over (ailing national carrier) Olympic Airways' debts, which reached the unbelievable sum of 2.4 billion euros", adding that OA has been turned into a 'funnel' of debts reaching several billion euros, with the fault belonging to all the governments in the post-junta period, which did not have the daring to put the country on a sound financial basis.

ELEFTHEROS TYPOS: "'Babacan agenda' ignites fires - He urged the Muslims of Thrace to call themselves 'Turks'."

ELEFTHEROTYPIA: "Stool pigeons at the demonstrations - Legalisation of generalised, preventive surveillance".

ESTIA: "Fairer proprty tax (anticipated in bill to be tabled by government) - Estia's proposal probably being adopted" by the government.

ETHNOS: "Turkish 'show' in Thrace - Babacan stirred up the (Moslem) minority", adding that the Turkish foreign minister opened up Ankara's entire agenda on the 'minority issues' during his 'private' visit to Thrace, putting forward an issue of a 'Turkish minority' (under international treaties, the minority in Thrace is a Moslem minority), urging the minority members to 'demand their rights'.

KATHIMERINI: "Clash and hard poker over control of OTE (Hellenic Telecommunications Organisation) betwen MIG (Marfin Investment Group) and government", adding that MIG's latest investment plans concerning OTE are turning into a hard poker game with the government and the telecoms management.

LOGOS: "New round of Athens-Skopje talks - Acceleration of procedures on name issue as of January".

NIKI: "Tragi-comedy with OA - Hirings being held at the same time that it is to be closed down", adding that the government had set in motion procedures for the hiring of 700 personnel at Olympic Airways, at the same time as it is planning to close down the national air carrier as a 'problem' enterprise.

RIZOSPASTIS: "The KKE (Communist Party of Greece) policy for a pro-popular development of the shipbuilding and repair industry, merchant shipping and the country's ports", charging that the EU policy, 'which ND (ruling New Democracy party) and PASOK (main opposition party and former government) have been co-formulating and implementing for so many years' in the sectors of shipping, ports and the shipbuilding and repair sector, is deeply anti-labour and anti-popular.

TA NEA: "Grey attack (reference to the outlawed Grey Wolves organisation in Turkey) in Istanbul, with clubs - Greek journalist beaten", saying that the severe beating and injury of Greek ethnic minority journalist Andreas Robopoulos in Istanbul cast a heavy shadow on the government's efforts for a Greek-Turkish rapprochement, and adding that Athens condemned the incident and lodged a demarche.

TO VIMA: "We're buying 450 tanks from Russia - The times are changing".

VRADYNI: "Brussels (EU) cutbacks in doctors' duty shifts - Overtime work in the health sector in the target-sights of the EU".
