  • [01] Libya proposes Med natgas pipeline to Greece

The Libyan government on Tuesday proposed the construction of a natural gas pipeline linking the North African country with Crete, in an invitation to examine prospects for such a project addressed to Athens amid a Greek deputy foreign minister's ongoing visit to the country.

Meanwhile, Deputy FM Petros Doukas, who arrived in Tripoli on Monday, had a series of meetings on Tuesday with Libyan National Oil Corp. (NOC) chairman and former General Secretary of the People's Committee (prime minister) Shokri Ghanem, the secretary of the General People's Committee (minister) for finance Muhammad Ali al-Huwayz, and General Post and Telecommunication Company (GPTC) chairman Mohammad el-Qaddafi, as discussions focused on Greek business activities in Libya and the opportunities presented.

Addressing Greek entrepreneurs in Libya during an event on Monday evening, Doukas said they have no reason to allow a market with so many and large opportunities, such as Libya, to be claimed by neighbouring countries in the Mediterranean.

Doukas said there were immense opportunities in Libya for expansion of business activities by Greek entrepreneurs, and made specific reference to infrastructure projects, energy, water resources management, transports, tourism, foods and armaments, among others.

He said the initiative belonged to the business people themselves, adding that they had the support of the Greek state via the Hellenic Exports Promotion Organisation (HEPO), the Hellenic Centre for Investment (ELKE), and the economic and commercial attaches.
