  • [01] PASOK leader's press conference Thursday

The main opposition PASOK party's Political Council will be convening at 10 a.m. on Thursday and at 13:30 party leader George Papandreou will be giving an across-the-board press conference at the Zappeion Hall while specific reference will be made to the Socialist International's (SI) meeting in Athens next week. The press conference will also be attended by Socialist International Secretary General Luis Ayala.

Party spokesman George Papaconstantinou, asked on Wednesday to comment on statements by PASOK cadres on the Tsoukatos-Siemens issue, declined any comment and referred to the Political Council meeting that will address these issues.

"Many statements have been made by cadres in the past days on an issue that we are all ardently interested in. I shall not comment on these statements, particularly a day before the very important press conference by the president of PASOK and the meeting of the Political Council which will address these issues," he said.

Papaconstantinou stressed that PASOK's positions are clear, the collective decisions have been recorded and they have been expressed by party leader Papandreou, adding that "from then on, some of our cadres feel the need to make their personal observations and to express their personal opinion. We are in a difficult period and we must all be calm and have a high sense of responsibility."

Commenting also on Wednesday on a report by the Eurobarometer on the trends of the past six months, Papaconstantinou said that "in 2004 Greece was the champion of Europe in soccer, in 2008 Greece is the champion of Europe in pessimism, since 6 out of 10 Greeks believe that their financial state over the next 12 months, just as in the case of the country, will be worse."

    [02] Navy Week begins Friday

Navy Week 2008 will begin with an address by Navy General Staff chief Vice Admiral George Karamalikis at the Greek Navy's floating museum, the Battleship Averof, on Friday at 8 in the evening. The inauguration ceremony will be attended by the national defence ministry's civil and military leadership.

Events that will be taking place throughout its duration were referred to during a press conference held the Greek Nautical Club on Wednesday by the parties involved.

Thessaloniki was selected to be the main city for the celebration, where events will be starting on Sunday with a church service at the Agias tou Theou Sophias Cathedral and the laying of a wreath at the Navarchos Votsis Monument. The events to be held in Thessaloniki will also include open sea sailing races with "optimist" and "laser" type vessels, painting exhibitions and concerts.

The ceremony for the Week's ending will be taking place in Thessaloniki on July 7, in the presence of Merchant Marine Minister George Voulgarakis.
