The event was organised by the University's Research Committee, and the recipients included Dr. Alkiviadis Bais, Associate Professor and head of the Laboratory of Atmospheric Physics (LAP) in the Physics Department of AUTH and atmospherics physicist Christos Zerefos, Professor at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and President of Athens' National Observatory and Bais' predecessor at the AUTH, who are among the 45 members of the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which was the co-recipient, together with former US vice-president and environmental activist Al Gore, of the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize.

The AUTH's Excellence and Innovation awards are awarded to eminent scientists for their participation in innovative research at European and international level.

The awards "are a new insititution, which were introduced this year, and aim at highlighting the performance, talents and success of the Greek univesities," AUTH Rector, Professor Anastasios Manthos, said during the ceremony, adding that with these awards the AUTH"honors those who bring honor to the AUTH".

Professors Zerefos and Bais were honored for their work on the IPCC, for which they were awarded with certificates of participation in the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize, following IPCC chairman Rajendra Pachauri's request that all the contributing scientists be acknowledged as individual Nobel Peace Prize winners, in recognition of their research into climate change.

Also honoured were Professors Zissis Samaras, Nikolaos Komninos and Nikolaos Mousiopoulos for their participation in European and international competitve programs, and Professor Ioannis Seiradakis for his contribution to the international recognition of the AUTH.

Innovation awards were presented to Professors Gr. Koltsakis, Leontios Hatzileontiadis and Nikolaos Michailidis, while Excellence awards in the sector of health were presented to Professors George Tehdorids, Evangelia Kouidi and Efstratios Kolymbianakis.

Finally, awards were further presented to Professor Vassilios Papanastasis, and to professor Athanassios Kaisis for his election to the honorary post of executive director of the European Patent Academy.

Attending the ceremony were Macedonia-Thrace ministry secretary general Loukas Ananikas, representatives of the Thessaloniki municipality, university professors and students.

[02] Athens festival in Attiko Woods

From June 30 through September 22, prominent artists representing various genres will appear in top-quality productions and performances at the Attiko Woods theatre, offering Athens' citizens and visitors a nightly dose of cultural refreshment.

A wide range of theatrical, music and dance performances will feature at this year's festival, including a tribute to singer-composer Grigoris Bithikotsis and the internationally-renowned musical Blood Brothers.

Theatrical troupes from throughout Greece will present productions catering to children and adults, featuring actors Thymios Karakatsanis, Kostas Voutsas, Kariofylia Karabeti, Yiorgos Haikalis, Tassos Halkias, Theodoris Atheridis, Smaragda Karydi, Yiorgos Marinos, Konstantinos Markoulakis and Yiorgos Kapoutzidis, among others.

Singers Stamatis Kraounakis, Lavrentis Maheritsas, Manolis Mitsias, Elly Paspala, Maria Farandouri, Dimitris Papadimitriou, Fotini Darra, Eleni Peta, Savvina Yiannatou, Nikos Xydakis, Anastasia Moutsatsou, Maryo, Fivos Delivorias, Melina Aslanidou, Rallia Christidou and the groups Onar and Ypogia Revmata, among others, will take audiences on a musical journey.

As part of efforts to make cultural events accessible to all citizens, the City of Athens Cultural Organisation has arranged free entry for the public to most events, and a minimal fee in some cases.

Performances start at 21:00 each evening. Tickets are available from the Attiko Woods theatre from 19:00 to 22:00 on the day of each performance.

The Athens Urban Transport Organisation (OASA) will operate a special bus on performance days, which leaves Kaniggos Square for the theatre at 20:15 then departs from Attiko Woods for the square at 23:45

Main opposition PASOK party leader George Papandreou's press conference and the new testimonies and information seeing the light of day on the SIEMENS affair dominated the headlines on Friday in Athens' newspapers.

ADESMEFTOS TYPOS: "Siemens case: Over 40 suspects were sent to the prosecutor's office".

APOGEVMATINI: "Papandreou at a dead-end - He did not give answers to the burning questions concerning PASOK's involvement with Siemens".

AVGHI: "Parliament plenary closes for summer, the Siemens investigation put off for later - Party leaders' curtain call on Friday in parliament".

AVRIANI: "Worry in PASOK over the 6,500,000 euros kickback - George Papandreou spoke for 2.5 hours at the press conference".
