[01] Sales period begins July 15The summer sales period will begin on Tuesday July 15 and last until August 31, providing consumers with the opportunity of purchasing products at reduced prices, but the Greek Consumers Centre (ELKEPA) warns consumers, however, to think carefully before making purchases.ELKEPA stresses that consumers should not create artificial needs for themselves, avoid purchasing products cheaply if they do not actually need them and before purchasing they should make a survey of the market, compare prices and select correctly, while shopkeepers are obliged to change defective products purchased during the sales period. Lastly, each item should have two prices, the one that was valid before the sales period began and the reduced price being offered during the sales period. CAPTION: ANA-MPA file photo of shopwindow. [02] Voulgarakis on shippingThe government and the main opposition PASOK party disagreed absolutely in Parliament on Friday on the policy that should be applied in coastal shipping, during a discussion on the relevant issue raised by PASOK in reaction to current government policy in the sector.PASOK officials claimed that the deregulation of the market regarding coastal shipping, as it is being implemented and supervised by the government, "has led to a state of unaccountability leaving many islands with substandard services and to a sharp increase in the prices of fares and of the canteens of ships." PASOK's Parliamentary representative Christos Papoutsis said that "we have a full harmonisation of practices and this has an impact on prices. For this reason, we have reached 90 percent and 100 percent since last year, while the increase in oil was not 90 percent and 100 percent over the three years, but it was 70 percent from last year until this year." Merchant Marine Minister George Voulgarakis replied that "the average in the percentage increases of all companies is about 16.23 percent. There are, of course, increases that are 32 percent, there are also increases that are 5 percent. In any case, what must be taken into consideration is that the increases in the price of oil are over 100 percent. If, therefore, participation in the fare is in the region of 70 percent, we should speak accordingly of the overdoubling of these prices."
