The Wednesday edition of Athens' dailies at a glance

The strong reactions to FYROM prime minister Nikola Gruevski's letter to Greek counterpart Costas Karamanlis, the bill on the Liberal Studies Centers, and the raging wildfires dominated the front pages of Wednesday's newspapers.

ADESMEFTOS TYPOS: "The colleges to operate under strict terms - Education ministry bill to be tabled in parliament at the end of the week".

APOGEVMATINI: "16,451 new hirings (in the wider public sector)".

AVGHI: "They're (government) pushing the youth to the private colleges".

AVRIANI: "The bank accounts of Trepeklis (alleged go-between in the SAIC-Siemens joint venture) and Tsoukatos (PASOK former prime minister Costas Simitis' economic advisor) being opened up - Investigating magistrate Zagorianos determined to find where the money from the kickbacks and bribes ended up", adding that the examining magistrate was determined to exhaust all margins of investigation into the Siemens 'black funds' affair, and especially on the...infamous contract for the supply of the strategic system of commincations and information management, the C4I (Athens 2004 Olympic Games security system) that comprises the biggest expenditure in the Athens Games for security.

CHORA: "Shakeups in the global economy - Worry of governments, businesses and households climaxes".

ELEFTHERI ORA: "Gruevski, now that he still has the backing of Washington, asks for a lot in order to get...the one", adding that "Skopje knows that the talk about a 'Macedonian minority and Macedonian language are fairy tales, but after more than 50 years of non-stop propaganda it is forced to not back down. While they still have the backing of Washington, they will attempt to touch the international community with irredentist sobs and tears over 'oppression by the Greeks'. If it manages to win the name, then it will be better able to consolidate its irredentist fairy tales".

ELEFTHEROS: "MPs against DEKO (public utilities and organizations) governors - They receive fat salaries, with miserly work".

ELEFTHEROS TYPOS: "Two-speed studies for college degrees - Required study also at the 'parent' AEI (institution of higher education) abroad (of which the specific college is a branch in Greece), and not only in Greece, foreseen in the education ministry regulations", adding that the Stylianidis (education minister) is a requirement for the recognitiion of professional rights for holders of European franchise-type degrees, noting that the requirement for students of those colleges to conduct part of their studies at the parent university with which their college is collaborating is being mulled by the education ministry as a pre-condition for recognition of the professional rights of the holders of degrees of such colleges.

ELEFTHEROTYPIA: "Window for phone tappings up to 2010 - OTE (Hellenic Telecommunications Organization): renewal of contracts, for 66 million euros, with the four providers", noting that in February OTE renewed for three years, at 66 million euros, the technical support contracts, leaving open the "special connection window" to the four suppliers, thus leaving wide open the gateway to 'malicious intents', and adding that the finds of an internal investigation into the risks of phone-tappings were kept secret from the OTE board of directors.

ESTIA: "Skopje violating the Interim Agreement - Blatant intervention in Greece's internal affairs".

ETHNOS: "Recognition of the colleges in two tranches - The private universities coming, through the Brussels window".

KATHIMERINI: "DEH (Public Power Corporation) now re-examining contract with Siemens for the construction of an electricity plant at Aghios Dimitrios".

LOGOS: "Something must be done, at last (over the problem of the wildfires) - Battle against time to extinguish the blazing nightmare in Inoi (border of Attica and Viotia prefectures, where a wildfire has been raging since Sunday afternoon) - Residential areas and PYRKAL (former munitions factory depot) were threatened".

NIKI: "The scandals and kickbacks have done major damage to Karamanlis' profile".

RIZOSPASTIS: "Announcement by KKE (Communist Party of Greece) central committee: Repel the anti-communist attack of the court martials era".

TA NEA: "Triple blow against markets, prices, salaries - Crisis scenery in Europe, US".

TO VIMA: "The fire raging from the Dervenochoria (Viotia prefecture) to Mandra (Attica prefecture) reached the courtyard of PYRKAL".

VRADYNI: "Semblence of order being put in the KES (Liberal Studies Centers, namely, the franchise-type colleges) - Inner Cabinet gives 'green light' to education ministry bill".
