Alternate government spokesman Evangelos Antonaros on Thursday stressed the government's determination to deal with transparency issues in the loss-making Hellenic Railways Organisation (OSE), as well as in troubled Olympic Airlines.

He was commenting on press reports that appeared on Thursday concerning the discovery of several undeclared and unrecorded freight cars in an OSE train that was involved in an accident, as well as "undeclared" tickets issued by OA.

The spokesman referred reporters to earlier statements on such issues by Transport Minister Kostis Hatzidakis but also stressed that the government intende to deal with such transparency issues with the utmost severity.

"There will be no deviation from this rule," he stressed, adding that OSE's mission was to manage the railways with security, transparency and economically viable manner.

He also rejected a comment that "appointed administrations are not punished" and said that many of the violations of transparency rules coming to light were a result of more monitoring and inspections that had uncovered practices that had remained hidden for decades and were now being identified and stamped out step by step.

"I am not saying that this will happen from one day to the next. But the aim is to discover the shortfalls and the unlawful behaviour in order to provide solutions; and these solutions will be provided," he stressed.
