  • [01] Man admits killing actor

Attica Security Police Director Brigadier Grigoris Balakos on Saturday morning announced the arrest of a 30-year-old Georgian for recently murdering actor Nikos Sergianopoulos. The man confessed the crime at dawn on Saturday.

The culprit met the victim for the first time at an Athens central square, at the night of his murder, where the actor proposed to him to go to his house to consume alcohol and take drugs. The two men went with the victimâs car to his home in the Athens suburb of Pangrati, where they drank beers and took drugs.

The Georgian told police that the actor made sexual advances to him and that when he refused, he was threatened with a knife by Sergianopoulos.

The culprit managed to take the knife away from the actor and stabbed him many times, killing him.

The Georgian is living illegally in Greece. He will appear before the public prosecutor on Monday.

Ecumenical Patriarch Vartholomeos and Ukraine's President Viktor Yushchenko in Kiev on Saturday took part in celebrations marking the 1020th anniversary of the baptism of Kiev Russians, which marked the start of the Slavic world's conversion to Christianity.

Giant posters of the Ecumenical Patriarch and President Yushchenko, alongside emblems of the great anniversary, decorated the centre of Kiev.

It is the first-ever visit by the Patriarch to the Ukraine.

Present at the ceremony were Archbishop of Athens and All Greece Ieronymos, Archbishop of Tirana and All Albania Anastasios and Kiev Metropolitan Vladimir.
