  • [01] Vartholomeos to visit Athos

    Ecumenical Patriarch Vartholomeos is to pay a six-day visit to the monastic community of Mount Athos from August 21-26, it was disclosed on Monday.

    Vartholomeos will arrive at noon on August 20 in Thessaloniki, Macedonia, and stay overnight at Ouranoupoulis.

    At 9 a.m. on August 21, he will arrive at Dafni and later go to Karyes where he will be officially welcomed. The Patriarch's visit takes place on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the death of one of the founders of the Dionysios Holy Monastery, Saint Nyfon.

    [02] 'Full Moon' events

    Special events will be held in archaeological sites in Trikala Prefecture, central Greece, to celebrate this summer's last Full Moon on August 16. The events titled "In the moonlight - Archaeological sites and monuments under the Full Moon" are hosted by the culture ministry and the general secretariat of antiquities and cultural heritage. Three archaeological sites, the Byzantine Castle in the city of Trikala, the archaeological site of Meteora and the arch bridge of Portaikos in Pili will remain open for the public until late at night offering a unique experience to stargazers and romantics wishing to marvel at the August Moon.
