  • [01] Greek PMI up to 52.5 in Aug.

Greece's Purchasing Managers' Index rose to 52.5 points in August, from 51.6 in July, reflecting improved conditions in the Greek manufacturing sector and mainly an accelerating increase in production and new orders.

Employment levels fell in August, while Greek manufacturing enterprises recorded a speedier growth of new orders in the domestic market, while export growth slowed.

The PMI measures business activity in the manufacturing sector. Readings above 50 indicate a growth sector, while readings below 50 a shrinking sector.

[02] Infrastructure projects worth 1.75 bln

An inter-ministerial meeting on Monday, chaired by Economy and Finance Minister George Alogoskoufis, approved the inclusion of 18 projects, budgeted at 1.752 billion euros, for a programme promoting joint ventures between public and private sector enterprises.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Alogoskoufis said all projects included to the programme were significant and covering civil administration, education, culture, sports, transportation and national defence.

"With this program we will build, more rapidly, the necessary infrastructure, accelerating growth in Greek regions and the economy in general amid an international credit crisis," the minister said.

He noted that projects included in the programme totaled 326, worth 5.7 billion euros so far.

[03] Rhodes event on sat systems

The European Space Agency (ESA) has announced that the second international symposium for scientists heading up satellite research projects and specifically the Daichi Advanced Land Observing Satellite (ALOS-Daichi) will be held on the island of Rhodes on November 3-7 this year.

The 2008 Joint PI Symposium of the ALOS Data Nodes follows the 2007 symposium held in Kyoto, Japan. The event was organised by the ESA in cooperation with the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), the Alaska Satellite Facility (ASF) of the Alaska Fairbanks University, Geoscience Australia and the Geo-informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) of Thailand.

The Symposium will offer a forum to exchange views on technical and scientific issues on the data exploitation. It will provide updates of the satellite status and will allow to present the progress in recent research of ongoing projects.

    [04] 'Culture train' in Evros

<!--ÔëòüìòñÞüìòThe 'culture train' organised by the northeastern prefecture of Evros will be arriving at the border town of Didymoticho on Tuesday, where it will hold a series of events until Friday that will provide a taste of the local area's contemporary and traditional cultural heritage.

Set up in a converted former goods train donated to the prefecture by the Hellenic Railways Organisation (OSE), the 'culture train' is travelling through the prefecture and into Bulgaria using the Alexandroupolis-Svilengrad railway line.

The events will include painting and photography exhibitions featuring local artists, a book fair, the screening of a digital film on the area's museums, archaeological sites and areas of natural beauty, as well as performances of traditional dances, theatre and workshops for children.

It is also designed as a means of promoting cultural exchanges between Greece and neighbouring Bulgaria and is 75 percent financed by the European Regional Development Fund under the EU's Interreg III/Phare CBC Greece-Bulgaria initiative.Caption: ANA-MPA file photo.-->
