[01] Papandreou on merits of democracyMain opposition PASOK party leader George Papandreou on Monday stated that democracy "is not in danger of tanks, but of the downgrading of institutions," adding that the new phenomena that are undermining insititutions are currently phenomena at an international level as well, with the dominant ones being the phenomena of the accumulation of great wealth by a few and strong and the accumulation of the mass media. He made the statements from Parliament's podium, during a party leaders' address on the international day of democracy. Communist Party of Greece (KKE) Secretary General Aleka Papariga said that the struggle for democracy "is an inseparable element of the struggle against the power of monopolies, of imperialism at national level and in international relations," noting that "the stronger state and employer force gets at national level all the more stronger become war and force in international relations." [02] Koudelka retrospective in AthensA retrospective of work by noted Czech photographer Josef Koudelka's opens at Athens' Benaki Museum on Wednesday, where it will run for two months. The exhibition is organised within the framework of events dedicated to the France's European Union presidency and signals the start of the Benaki Museum's new season. "We are expecting thousands of visitors," Benaki Curator Angelos Delivorias told a press conference on Tuesday, also attended by the Czech artist himself. In 1968 Koudelka witnessed and chronicled the Soviet invasion of Prague and the crushing of the Czech resistance. He was later forced to flee the country. His pictures of the events became dramatic international symbols (though he published them anonymously at first), helping him to win the esteemed Robert Capa Gold Medal. This proved a major turning point in Koudelka's life and career. In 1970 he was granted asylum in Britain, living there for the next 10 years. Koudelka now lives in France. Athens' "Josef Koudelka Retrospective" is being organised in cooperation with the Magnum and Apeiron photo agencies.
