The government on Monday declined to comment over a decision by the
administration of Athens polytechnic -- officially known as the
National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) -- to refuse to lift its
campus asylum status, saying this concerns the operation of the
independent justice system<font size="3" face="Times New Roman
Greek">. As regards a proposal by Popular Orthodox Rally (LAOS)
President George Karatzaferis concerning the lifting of the university
asylum regime, government spokesman Evangelos Antonaros said the
government has made its own proposals on the issue, which have already
become a law of the state. "Requesting the lifting of university
asylum is up to the prosecutor and the university administrative body,"
Antonaros said, adding that "those who are responsible for maintaining
order in universities and ensuring their smooth operation will do their
duty." Commenting on the likelihood of amending the university asylum
framework, Antonaros stated that existing laws have been passed
recently, stressing that they should be implemented as well.
Critics of the university asylum policy in Greece, applied in its
present form since the early 1980s, charge that merely serves as a
haven for self-styled anarchist and anti-state trouble-makers, as
well as even petty criminals, to assemble and unleash urban attacks
without the fear of arrest. Widespread vandalism is also blamed on
the asylum policy, critics, including Karatzaferis, charge.
