[01] Christmas carols for PM KaramanlisThe city of Athens' childrens choir, accompanied by noted composer George Katsaros, sang Christmas Carols on Wednesday for Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis, his wife Natassa and their children.The prime minister's family was treated to several versions of carols from various parts of Greece, before handing out Christmas presents to the children of the choir and musicians. The childrens choir of Athens took first place at the "Choir Olympiad" held in Austria last summer. [02] Papandreou receives traditional troupesMain opposition PASOK party leader George Papandreou on Wednesday received several traditonal dance groups of different parts of Greece that sang him Christmas carols. PASOK leader danced together with the members of the groups and afterwards both parts exchanged wishes and christmas presents.[03] Illegal immigrants, trafficker arrestedBorder guards in the northwestern city of Kastoria city on Thursday arrested a local man, 47, and three Albanian nationals who had earlier entered the country illegally. Another three local suspects were arrested for providing assistance to the alleged migrant trafficker.[04] Minister's service car torchedUnknown perpetrators early Friday morning torched a service car used by Deputy Environment, Town Planning and Public Works Minister Stavros Kaloyannis outside his residence in downtown Ioannina, northwerstern Greece .An investigation revealed cloths soaked in flammable liquid under the wheels of the burned vehicle. [05] PASOK leader's mother hospitalised after accidentMargaret Papandreou, 85, mother of main opposition PASOK party leader George Papandreou, was admitted to the KAT hospital in the Athens suburb of Kifisia on Friday afternoon following an accident that occurred at her residence.[06] Patriarch's Christmas wishEcumenical Patriarch Vartholomeos stressed in his Christmas message on Tuesday that most people's hope that has been based on worldly "gods" is collapsing in a pitiful way every day."The human image is being humiliated and crushed in the midst of numbers, machines, computers, stock exchanges and multicoloured flags of void ideologiocal convenience. [07] Christmas lunch for homelessThe city of Athens' Homeless Foundation will once again host a festive Christmas lunch with various events and offerings planned for Christmas Day, from noon onwards, at a municipal meal provision centre in downtown Athens.Volunteers will hand out gifts (clothing, footwear etc) provided by the Athens Market, a newly launched municipal social service for low-income families and needy fellow citizens. [08] Prisoners released under new lawThe gradual release of thousands of prisoners from Greek jails, in compliance with Law 3727/2008, published in the Government Gazette on December 18, began in Greece this week. The first 15 inmates from Korydallos Prison, Athens, were released on Tuesday, while a number of prisoners benefiting from the new law were also released from jails nationwide within the framework of new legislation aimed at relieving overcrowding in the country's prisons.
