[01] PASOK leader to visit Chios island
Main opposition PASOK party leader George Papandreou will visit the
eastern Aegean island of Chios on Tuesday and will be meeting the
prefect and representatives of local mastich production agencies.
At 7 in the evening, Papandreou will address the pre-congress procedure
of the party's prefectural congress organising committee at the Omirio
Cultural Centre.
Speaking at PASOK's meeting of the coordinating political body on
Monday, Papandreou said that the country "cannot proceed with a prime
minister held hostage and it is necessary that it be rid both of the
policies of the (Prime Minister Costas) Karamanlis government and of
the Karamanlis government itself."
The PASOK leader further said that all of the party's cadres, members
and friends must respond to this struggle, as well as the Greek people
themselves, while the rest of the political forces must state their
case and assume their responsibilities.
Lastly, Papandreou stressed that PASOK's positions and proposals for
the country to come out of the crisis are known and are included both
in the memorandum submitted by himself to the President of the Republic
on a crackdown on corruption and in the proposal that he tabled in
Parliament on a change in the political system that concerns, among
other things, the changing of the electoral law and the revision of the
constitution.
