Matthew Nimetz, the UN secretary general's envoy, spoke of a "substantive rift" between Greece and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM)on Saturday.

The envoy was speaking to reporters in the morning (Greek time), following his talks on FYROM's name issue with the country's representative Nikola Dimitrov.

Nimetz said that the meeting concerned "the position of his government (Dimitrov's) on the proposal concerning the issue of the name and generally speaking."

He added that he had met with Greek representative Adamantios Vassilakis earlier in the day and had listened to the "other side."

Nimetz further said that "there are substantive differences between the two governments on the proposal I made on February 19 and tomorrow (at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Greek time) I will be meeting bother ambassadors and we shall see where we stand and to what degree we can see if these differences can be bridged."

Referring to his meeting with Vassilakis on Friday morning, Nimetz said he listened to his report and stressed that "his government had many queries and views" and then the same thing happened with ambassador Dimitrov.

Nimetz also said that he will not be voicing any new ideas on Saturday.

Saturday's joint meeting will be taking place in Nimetz's office in Manhattan.
