  • [01] Inflation jumps to 4.4% in Feb.

The annual inflation in Greece jumped to 4.4 percent in February 2008, compared with the same month last year, after a 2.7-pct figure during the 12-month period from February 2006 to February 2007.

The National Statistics Service said the consumer price index fell 0.8 percent in February from the previous month, after an 1.3-pct decline in February 2007.

The country's harmonised inflation rate jumped to 4.5 pct in February from 3.0 pct in February 2007.

The statistics service said the 4.4-pct inflation rate in February reflected a 10.2 pct increase in housing prices, a 6.6 pct rise in food and beverage prices, a 5.3 pct increase in transportation prices, a 4.6 pct rise in education prices and a 4.3 pct rise in hotel-coffee-restaurant prices.

Emmanouel Kontopyrakis, secretary-general of the statistics service, said the consumer price index was expected to remain around February's levels in March, on the precondition that oil prices did not show significant changes.

Kontopyrakis said the core CPI (excluding fuel and seasonal goods) rose to 3.3 pct in February, from 2.8 pct in January and 2.9 pct in February 2007.
