[01] Olympic flame in Athens on Sat.
Memories of the Athens 2004 Olympic Games are being revived as the
torch carrying the sacred Olympic flame arrives in Athens on Saturday,
as part of its journey to Beijing.
Seven torchbearers will represent the City of Athens in the historic
2008 torch telay, which was launched on March 24 in ancient Olympia.
Faithful to the principles of Olympism, Athens Mayor Nikitas Kaklamanis
will run together with Paralympian Athanasios Barakas.
Greece's largest municipality will also be represented by: former
basketball star Vassilis Goumas; municipal sanitation worker Markos
Spyridonidis, the father of nine; Therapy Centre for Dependent
Individuals staff-member Theodora Passalidou; beach volleyball world
champion Vasso Karadasiou; distinguished composer and poet Lefteris
Papadopoulos; Sydney 2000 Paralympics gold medalist and Greek
Paralympian Association deputy chairman Athanasios Barakas; as well as
City of Athens Youth and Sports Organisation chairman, Athens
councillor, physician and former basketball international Vassilis
Kikilias.
Torchbearers will take the following route: Mavromateon St - Alexandras
Ave - Vas. Sofias Ave - Hellenic Parliament - Amalias Ave - Dionysiou
Aeropagitou - Acropolis.
