[01] Barroso meets with Ecumenical Patriarch
European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso and EU Enlargement
Commissioner Olli Rehn, currently on a visit to Turkey, met with
Ecumenical Patriarch Vartholomeos (Bartholemew) in Istanbul on Friday.
During the meeting at the Phanar, the Patriarchate's seat, Barroso
asked to be informed on the progress made on issues affecting the
Ecumenical Patriarchate and the ethnic Greek minority in the country,
stressing that the ecumenical nature of the Patriarchate is very
significant. Problems faced by the Ecumenical Patriarchate are
included in EU reports on Turkey, which assess the progress made in the
implementation of reforms and the country's convergence with the
European standards. Barroso has called on Ankara to speed up reforms,
stressing that Turkey will have to meet all necessary criteria before
joining the EU.
