[01] Targeted policies to combat unemploymentMain opposition PASOK party spokesman George Papaconstantinou suggested targeted policies to combat unemployment noting, that "it is a phenomenon that is created by the current economic conjuncture and accrues from correct or wrong policies"."Today, a policy against unemployment should be targeted especially on the youth, as are the proposals we have tabled for a four-year reduction of social security contributions," stressed Papaconstantinou, and charged that the government does not have a policy on employment, while he also spoke of an "economy that is extremely vulnerable to the crisis". [02] Electrified fences to prevent bears' entrance onto Egnatia motorwayEnvironment, Town Planning and Public Works Minister George Souflias on Wednesday announced the upgrading of the fencing and the building of non-lethal electrified wires along portions of the Egnatia motorway spanning the breadth of northern Greece in order to prevent bears from entering the high-speed highway. Souflias made the statement at a meeting with brown bear protection organisations, following a number of deaths of the endangered species on the specific roadway, which criss-crosses much of the mountainous Pindus range of northwest Greece. The ministry will also begin a campaign to brief rural residents of the western Macedonia province on bears' behaviour and how to protect themselves against the predators when in the forest.[03] Police unions decry officer's assassination by terror gangPolice officers and their union representatives continued a protest outside the main police headquarters in Athens on Wednesday, with the main slogan being, "No to violence against police officers; violence against police is violence against the whole of Greek society".A rally was held outside the police headquarters building on Tuesday as well. In an announcement, a union representing greater Athens police officers underlined that the cruel murder of police officer Nektarios Savvas -- who was assassinated outside the apartment building of a protected witness in ELA terrorist trial -- was an injury against institutions and democracy. [04] SOS for Thessaly's Pineios RiverPineios, the third largest river in Greece in terms of length and the "life line" of the entire Thessaly plain, Greece's "bread basket", is facing a severe and longstanding water shortage, according to environmentalists and researchers.The dramatic decrease in water volume is caused by the fact, among others, that millions of cubic metres of water are used annually -- in the most ineffective manner -- to irrigate thousands of hectares of cultivated lands, including "thirsty" and subsidised cotton crops, as well as to meet the water supply needs of residential areas. Scientists in the country have warned that the situation will deteriorate further with each passing year given that both water reserves renewed by winter rains and snowfall, as well as the subterranean water table, are being exhausted. The 216 km-long Pineios River has its springs in the mountain range of Pindus, in northwest Greece, and a number of tributaries flow into it before it empties into the Aegean Sea, northeast of the eponymous Tempe Valley in central Greece.
