  • [01] FM honored by AHEPA

NEW YORK (ANA-MPA/P. Panagiotou) - The American Hellenic Educational and Progressive Association (AHEPA) held its 87th annual congress in San Francisco and elected a new board on Saturday. Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis was the person of honour this year, and was presented with the organisation's 2009 Pericles Award.

"I accept with great pleasure the 2009 Pericles Award," Bakoyannis stressed in a written message to the congress, adding that "it is with profound regret that I shall not be able to attend in person to thank all of you who are giving me such an honour and to express to you my gratitude and my thanks."

Among other things, Bakoyannis said in her message that "AHEPA represents millions of Greeks from abroad and it has played a wonderful role in cultivating and strengthening bilateral relations between Greece and the United States. The members of AHEPA have not only progressed in the professional sector but they have also succeeded in preserving their Greek roots and values intact and we are proud of this."

The foreign minister also said that "being the Foreign Minister of Greece, I would like to express my profound admiration and my gratitude for the role that your members are playing in promoting our country, through their actions and words in the United States. In parallel, I would like to reassure you that we in Greece greatly appreciate your achievements and we are proud of the prosperity of the Greek American community."
