    Athens Stock Exchange opening: Rise

    Equity prices were rising at the opening of trade on Friday on the Athens Stock Exchange (ASE), with the basic share price index up 0.75 percent, standing at 2,370.69 points at 10:45 a.m., and turnover at 9.2 million euros.

    Individual sector indices were moving upward nearly across the board, with the only losses in Food & Beverage, down 1.34 percent.

    The biggest gains were in Mass Media, up 1.79 percent; Chemicals, up 1.38 percent; and Raw Materials, up 1.36 percent.

    The FTSE/ASE 20 index for blue chip and heavily traded stocks was up 0.45 percent, the FTSE/ASE MID 40 index was up 0.64 percent, and the FTSE/ASE-80 small cap index was up 0.23 percent.

    Of the stocks moved, 56 were up, 15 were down, and 19 were unchanged.

    The revised National Plan on the new flu A/H1N1 outbreak to be presented by health minister Dimitris Avramopoulos to the relevant inter-ministerial committee at an extraordinary meeting to be chaired by prime minister Costas Karamanlis on Friday, speculation on early general elections in the autumn, the Siemens bribery and kickbacks case, and the source of wealth statements of the 300 parliamentary MPs, which were made public on Thursday, were the main front-page items in Athens' newspapers on Friday.
