  • [01] Nine candidates for Larco plant (recasts)

A total of nine Greek and foreign investors have expressed an interest in a procedure to privatise Larco, a mining and metals plant in south-central Greece, Economy and Finance Minister Yiannis Papathanassiou announced on Monday.

The minister, in a statement, said the number of investors interested in the privatisation of Larco showed there was strong investment interest for the company.

"This clearly created a positive base for the development of the privatisation procedure to the benefit of the enterprise and the country. Increased interest for Larco was also a clear message of confidence in the prospects of the Greek economy in the midst of an unprecedented economic crisis," he stated.

The nine bids are currently being evaluated by the state's financial and legal consultant.

[02] PM thanks Cyprus, Turkey for support

Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis on Monday spoke with Cyprus President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan by phone.

Christofias called Karamanlis to express his support in the face of several wildfires that erupted in Greece, while the Greek PM thanked the Cypriot president for the fire-fighting aid dispatched by the island republic.

The Turkish premier also expressed his solidarity with his Greek counterpart, whereas Karamanlis thanked Erdogan for the dispatch of a Turkish fire-fighting plane to Greece.
