  • [01] PM to chair Inner Cabinet, meet with Mesic

Prime minister George Papandreou will chair a meeting of the Inner Cabinet shortly before noon on Tuesday, ahead of the tabling of the draft 2010 state budget, which targets a reduction of the state deficit to 9.5 percentage points of GDP, in parliament on Thursday.

Papandreou is also scheduled to meet with visiting Croatian President Stjepan Mesic at 2:30 p.m.

[02] Three candidates to vie for ND leadership

Former Athens mayor and health minister Dimitris Avramopoulos on Monday announced that he was bowing out of the race to succeed main opposition New Democracy leader Costas Karamanlis at the party's helm, saying he does not want to be part of any "crisis" in the party amid the ongoing election process.

Avramopoulos' decision now leaves three candidates: former ministers Dora Bakoyannis and Antonis Samaras and current Thessaloniki Prefect Panagiotis Psomiadis.

In qualifying his decision, he again reiterated his proposal for allowing "friends" and "supporters" of the party, beyond registered rank-and-file members, the right to vote for a new ND president.

The withdrawal comes just days ahead of an ND extraordinary Congress on the weekend that will decide amendments to the party's Charter provisions for the election of the party president, with the aim of broadening the voter base.

    [03] 5.7R rocks Cephallonia

A moderate earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale rocked the island of Cephallonia in the Ionian Sea on Tuesday morning, but no damage was immediately reported.

The quake, which was strongly felt on Cephallonia and nearby Zakynthos island, was also felt in the entire Ionian Islands complex and parts of the Peloponnese.

The earthquake was recorded at 7:25 a.m. at a distance of 334 kilometers west of Athens, with its epicenter in the sea region southwest of Cephallonia at an epicentral depth of 10 kilometers.

    [04] Dockworkers on strike

Dock workers at the port of Piraeus on Monday announced the start of a 48-hour strike demanding that China's Cosco Pacific should not take over management of the country's largest port.

Piraeus Port Authority's dock workers staged a 17-day strike protesting against the contract but had threatened to resume strike mobilizations if their demends were not met.

The government expressed its concern over the strike decision. Economy, Competitiveness and Shipping Minister Luca Katseli said it was difficult for her to understand the legal basis of dock workers' decision after the government pledged to begin a dialogue with the Chinese company over renegotiating parts of the contract.
