    The campaigns of the three candidates for the main opposition New Democracy (ND) leadership race is heating up as the November 29 election for a new party president approaches. On Friday, Dora Bakoyannis will address a gathering in Maroussi, Antonis Samaras in Keratsini and Nea Smyrni in the greater Athens area, and Panagiotis Psomiadis in Thessaloniki.

    Former foreign minister and Athens ex-mayor Bakoyannis toured Sparta and Tripolis on Thursday, and addressed a campaign rally in Tripolis later in the evening.

    Former culture minister Samaras visited Nafpaktos, Messolongi and Patras on Thursday and addressed a gathering in Patras.

    Thessaloniki prefect Psomiadis will address campaign rally in Thessaloniki on fFiday night at the Vellidio center.

    Clarifications on the 'freeze' on public sector salaries, Tax Bureau audits on doctors in the posh Kolonaki district of Athens, and the appointment of Belgian prime minister Herman Van Rompuy as the EU's first President and the UK's European Commissioner for trade Catherine Ashton as its first Foreign Affairs Chief during a special summit of the 27-nation bloc in Brussels on Thursday, were the main front-page items in Athens' dailies on Friday.
