[01] Christmas carols for the political leadershipChildren from the "Smile of a Child" organization for missing and exploited children and members of the Karpathos island association "Dimitra" sang Christmas carols for Prime Minister George Papandreou at the Maximos Mansion government headquarters on Thursday, Christmas Eve.The choirs of the SOS Children's Village and the Greek Scouts sang Christmas carols for main opposition New Democracy (ND) party leader Antonis Samaras at the ND party main offices in Athens. The Christmas carols for Communist Party of Greece (KKE) General Secretary Aleka Papariga were sung by the members of the coordinating committee of STAGE programme workers. Kastelorizo island cultural association members sang Christmas carols, while Christmas songs and dances were performed by a Cretan association for Popular Orthodox Rally (LAOS) leader George Karatzaferis. Members of the Pontian Greek Federation and the choir of the Pan-Epirotic Federation sang Christmas carols for Radical Left Coalition (SYRIZA) Parliamentary Group President Alexis Tsipras. [02] Christmas to be celebrated with festivities throughout the countryChristmas will be celebrated throughout Greece on Friday, while children took to the streets on Thursday, Christmas eve, ringing small metal triangles as they go from house to house to sing the "kalanda" (good news), the equivalent of carols, for which they are rewarded with sweets and pocket money.Festivities for the holidays have also been scheduled by the cities, towns and villages throughout the country. The City of Athens has put up its traditional giant Christmas tree in central Syntagma Square, while a Carousel and musical and theatrical events will be staged at the Zappeion Mansion, and an Earth's Christmas Forest in the nearby National Gardens dotted with little houses displaying how the holidays are celebrated throughout the world. The Carousel and Christmas Forest open at 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (Christmas Forest) and 9:00 p.m. (Carousel), and will run through January 6.
