  • [01] Promahonas closed by farmers

(ANA-MPA) -- Protesting farmers heading into the 16th consecutive day of mobilisations on Saturday continued to block truck traffic at the Promahonas border post.

The Egnatia motorway at the Kedryllia interchange is also closed but the old Serres-Kavala road is open. Traffic will not be blocked on Saturday on the Serres-Thessaloniki highway at Strymonikos.

Conversely, Grevena-area farmers decided not to close the Egnatia link with the Grevena-Kozani old road over the weekend in order to facilitate hotel proprietors and tourism businesses.

Meanwhile, a second meeting among farmers from 16 roadblocks from the regions of Macedonia and Thessaly was held on Saturday near the Promahonas checkpoint.

Protesting farmers from central Greece decided to escalate mobilisations in the next days and to remain at roadblocks at Alamana, Kastro, Elatia and Livanates.

    [02] Tsipras at SYN conf'

Coalition of the Left (Synaspismos) party leader Alexis Tsipras on Saturday stressed, in his opening speech at a two-day conference of his party's central committee, that "we will not organise a congress to square accounts".

He also proposed the holding of an extraordinary congress.

Tsipras cited a series of reasons why a congress is necessary, referring to a crisis between Synaspismos and its Parliament-affiliated SYRIZA grouping, the smallest party in the legislature.

"We have tired the people of the left" he said.

Referring to political developments and the condition in the economy, he characterised the government's policy as "disappointing".
