The blocking of border posts by disgruntled farmers over the past few weeks has generated international media attention and heated criticism on both sides of the border.

[02] Carnival celebrated throughout Greece

The western port-city of Patras traditionally boasts the biggest and best-known carnival festivities in Greece, although several other regions -- especially in northern Greece and the Ionian islands -- have distinct customs and rites, many predating Christianity and based on ancient pagan rituals. Some 30,000 carnival participants, including Italian acrobats and drummers, are expected to parade through Patras' main thoroughfare, both on foot and atop floats.

[03] Flooding along Evros River

Another 6,000 hectares were flooded across Evros.

According to reports, Evros River levels were rising, surpassing 2.97 metres at the Kyprinos station (the alert level set is 4.80 metres); 5.52 metres (alert level 4.70 metres) at the Pythio station; 4.30 metres (alert level 3.60 metres) at Kipi, while at the Petalo station levels exceeded the alert level of 5.60 metres and reached 6.20 metres.

In Erythropotamos, in the Didimoticho region, the water level was at 7.42 metres -- with alert level at 5.60 metres.

The situation is currently under control, according to local authorities, who are in contact with Bulgarian authorities monitoring the water flow in Ivailovgrad, Studen Kladenets and Kirjali, on the upstream Bulgarian side of the border.

The spectre of Greece's deficit and debt crisis on the eurozone and related austerity measures expectedly dominated the front-page headlines in the Saturday editions of Athens' newspapers.
