Papandreou met in the morning with Bank of Greece Governor George Provopoulos and discussed developments in the economy and chaired an informal meeting of the cabinet.

The prime minister stressed that intensification of work was necessary in quality and quantity, "because we have the continuation of a difficult struggle ahead of us."

Referring to the recent decision taken by the EU summit in Brussels, he said that "we passed a cape with difficult handlings and we succeeded in Greece being backed, as well as this issue becoming European also."

He added that there are the socialists' proposals for the creation of a more effective, more practical and faster mechanism for handling the loan needs of eurozone coutries.

However, he pointed out that a mechanism now exists and what is foremost is the work that must be done in Greece, the ministries' work, which is not only technocratic, but political as well.

The prime minister termed the coming period difficult which, as he said, requires even greater contact with people, adding that the citizen must become a participant in the big changes.

Papandreopu further said that all the big changes will take place in 2010, so that the citizens will experience the results of these changes in the coming years.

The "Kallikratis" plan will be the epicentre of all the changes, around which the country's entire development effort will move.

Papandreou stressed that the operational weaknesses of public administration are among the issues on which particular weight must be placed.

He also said that the regaining of the country's feeling of dignity and reliability is a very important issue, as well as the feeling of relief among the people.

The prime minister underlined the need for the stability and growth programme to be adherred to strictly with the mobilisation of all forces, partisan, political, as well as of public administration.

Lastly, he added that there must be a consistent and timely implementation of all the commitments that the government has undertaken in the framework of its programme.
