  • [01] ASE opening: Rise

    Equity prices were rising at the opening of trade on Thursday on the Athens Stock Exchange (ASE), with the basic share price index up 0.87 percent, standing at 2,085.41 points at 11:30 a.m., and turnover at 25.820 million euros.

    Individual sector indices were moving mostly upward, with the biggest gains in Food and Beverages, up 2.58 percent; and Banks, up 1.61 percent.

    The biggest losses were in Health, down 3.26 percent; and Oil, down 0.65 percent.

    The FTSE/ASE 20 index for blue chip and heavily traded stocks was up 1.01 percent, the FTSE/ASE MID 40 index was down 0.12 percent, and the FTSE/ASE-80 small cap index was up 0.50 percent.

    Of the stocks traded, 66 were up, 21 were down, and 17 were unchanged.

    The Greek economy and the speculation of recourse to the IMF, the changes in the taxation system and the penalties announced by Finance Minister George Papaconstantinou for tax evaders, dominated the headlines on Thursday in Athens' newspapers.

    ELEFTHEROTYPIA: "Tax Bureau is stalking - Market is withering".

    ETHNOS: "Finance Ministry's ultimatum to public entities to curtail expenses".

    IMERISSIA: "Papaconstantinou to newspaper: Tax evaders will be sent to jail".

    KATHIMERINI: "Reversals in the way pensions will be calculated".
