  • [01] ASE opening: Rise

    Equity prices were rising at the opening of trade on Wednesday on the Athens Stock Exchange (ASE), with the basic share price index up 0.81 percent, standing at 1,710.36 points at 11:00 a.m., and turnover at 44.483 million euros.

    Individual sector indices were moving mostly upward, with the biggest gains in Raw Materials, up 2.53 percent; and Chemicals, up 2.07 percent.

    The biggest losses were in Telecoms, down 2.07 percent; and Health, down 3.75 percent.

    The FTSE/ASE 20 index for blue chip and heavily traded stocks was up 1.07 percent, the FTSE/ASE MID 40 index was down 1.29 percent, and the FTSE/ASE-80 small cap index was up 0.08 percent.

    Of the stocks traded, 42 were up, 32 were down, and 21 were unchanged.

    Prime Minister George Papandreou's message for national unity aiming at exiting from the economic crisis, the skyrocketing of the spread and plunge on the Athens Stock Exchange, the downgrading of Greece's and Portugal's credit rating Standard and Poor's and the speculators' raid against Greece and Portugal, dominated the headlines on Wednesday in Athens' newspapers.
