[03] FinMin: Very close to agreementFinance minister George Papaconstantinou said on Friday that "we are very close" to agreement on the EU support mechanism for the Greek economy, adding that the government "will do whatever necessary for the country's salvation".Addressing an Economist international conference in Athens, Papaconstantinou said that the government is pushing forward a three-year program of reforms and harsh adjustment so that the country will have no immediate borrowing problem. But even more so, the program will give Greece the ease, without the daily anxiety of the fluctuations on the international markets, to kick-start the major changes necessary, the minister added. "We are determined to take the decisions that will determine Greece's course in the coming years and the future of the next generations," Papaconstantinou stressed. He said that if this discussion had taken place two months ago, the sum of the assistance would have been smaller and the actions that Greece needed to take would also have been smaller. "The measures announced in March proved insufficient, on the one had due to the deficit and on the other to the fact that the time we thought we had at our disposal proved much less," he said. In all cases, he assured, the government will protect the vulnerable and will not allow their marginalisation. "But it is necessary to contain the deficit and the debt and restore our country's credibility," he stressed.
