[01] PASOK: Local gov't candidacies on Sun.

According to reports, during the PASOK party's national council session on Sunday the candidates for regions will be announced, while regarding the political framework with which PASOK will proceed, it was announced that the party is ready to announce another 60-70 mayoral candidates.

On the question of the major municipalities of Athens, Piraeus and Thessaloniki, according to the same reports, PASOK has reached a conclusion on the candidates preferred.

The prime minister's decision on these names might be announced on Sunday or even earlier.

In any case, over a period of seven or eight days, all of PASOK's candidacies will have been announced.

A session of the party's political council is expected during the week.

Internal consultations and opinion polls will be completed for PASOK party in the coming days, reports state.

[02] ND again calls for 'different policy mix'

Samaras referred to a worsening of a series of economic indicators and concluded that "the memorandum is not a restructuring of public finances. It is killing the Greek economy and dissolving Greek society."

He reiterated a proposal for a "different policy mixture," with measures that combat the deficit and recession simultaneously; which will erase the deficit in two years and slash the state debt to 100 percent of GDP by 2013 -- compared to 150 percent that he predicted on the basis of the memorandum policy.

"With our plan we shall do away with restrictions of the memorandum, so that we can follow a policy of growth; not dolling out grants with borrowed money, but with a decrease in tax rates and a drastic abolition of distortions; a strengthening the competitiveness of the Greek economy," Samaras stressed.

Lastly, he aired a personal criticism of the prime minister, saying that his policy is leading the country into the "vicious circle of recession", while ND's political proposal is an exit from the crisis with recovery and growth.

[03] Classic motorcycle exhibition in Hania

Seventy-five motorcycles, with the oldest dating to 1910 and the rarest being a 1914 Triumph and a BSA H28 - replete with acetylene headlights - will be on display. Other two-wheelers on display include now out-of-production models by Zundapp, Solex, Bultaco, NSU, Norton and Florettes.

All of the cycles are in extremely good working order.

The inaugural exhibition began in 2000 and takes place at the end of every summer in Hania. This year's event concludes on Sept. 6.

[04] Event at Halki seminary

He characteristically noted that the exhibition could be considered "a routine event if the issues and the premises, with which it is dealing, had not been points of tension in the past.

"We shall not know for a long time yet if these moments that we are experiencing are historic," the minister said and stressed the significance of cooperation between the creators of the two countries.

The secretary general of the Turkish culture ministry, the mayor of Princes Isles in the Sea of Marmara, the director of Istanbul's famed Topkapi Museum and numerous Greek and Turkish artists were among the guests at the inauguration and a reception that followed in the seminary's gardens.

[05] Exhibition on ... exam cheats

On display are some of the 200 'crib sheets' confiscated over the last three decades (1984-2010) by invigilators during exams, including some true "masterpieces" of the cheater's art. Thirty-two representative "types" of crib sheet are set out in two display cabinets.

Among the most impressive is a "scroll" that is two metres long and just four centimetres wide, wrapped around two sticks at either end and densely written on both sides in order to cram the maximum of information into the minimum space.

Of considerable craftsmanship is a second 'scroll' measuring one metre in length made out of extremely thin rice paper and written using an architect's rapidograph - a specialist technical pen used to make extremely thin lines.

According to a professor at the university, writing out the particular crib sheet probably took the student in question up to 10 hours at least - time that, if devoted to studying, would probably have allowed the student to pass the exam without cheating at all.

Also notable among the more traditional crib sheets is an entire 'mini-book' made of 100 photocopied pages reduced to 7X10 centimetres, while one student had so many hidden crib sheets on him that he was forced to make an "index" to remember which was which. (ANA-MPA)

Organisers of the exhibition noted that the collection of "traditional" crib sheets will stop as of this year since the art of cheating has evolved along with modern technology and students now use more sophisticated electronic means involving their mobile phones and other portable electronic devices.

The exhibition is currently on show at the Thessaloniki University Economic Science Department but organisers say that it may be permanently moved to the department's library as a "example to be avoided" for students. (ANA-MPA)
