  • [01] Samaras: Defeat for government

ANA-MPA/Main opposition New Democracy (ND) party leader Antonis Samaras, addressing deputies who are elected in the Attica region on Monday, stressed that "PASOK sustained a strategic defeat," adding that "the (general election" bluff did not succeed and the Greek people sent a resounding message of change in policy."

Samaras further said that "we can win Attica and we shall win it" and called on his deputies to intensify their efforts and to support the candidacy of Vassilis Kikilias.NA-MPA

ND is now focusing its efforts on Attica and the Peloponnese, since the two regions have an increased political importance, while constituting wagers of the party's president. It is characteristic that Samaras was critical towards the deputies of Attica who did not help in the first round.

In general, ND shows satisfaction over the reading of the election results. Codifying their conclusions, party officials said that "the elections constitute a clear political defeat for PASOK and Mr. Papandreou and a total return of ND following last year's heavy defeat."

They also believe that ground exists in the second round of the elections since the extortionate dilemma of Parliamentary elections will not exist.
