[01] Spinalonga island to reopen as tourist attraction(ANA-MPA) -- The islet of Spinalonga, a one-time leper colony whose history was recently dramatised as a highly successful local television series based on the book 'The Island' by Victoria Hislop, is to reopen as a tourist attraction on the weekends, after an initiative by the municipality of Aghios Nikolaos in eastern Crete. The municipality, local bodies and the 13th Byzantine monuments ephorate (directorate) have submitted a series of proposals to the culture and tourism ministry to inaugurate free access to the isle on a daily basis. The rocky islet, just off the northern coast of Crete, was closed to visitors due to a lack of staff. The name Spinalonga hails from Crete's Venetian period in the late Middle Ages, as it was called Spira Lunga, "long thorn". Local authorities have stressed that the wide publicity gained by the site, due to the popular television series on Greek television, has greatly increased the interest of visitors, and that keeping the island open would satisfy demand and boost the local economy. During the upcoming Christmas holidays the island will be open daily, except on major holidays.
