  • [01] fYRoM farmers close crossing

SKOPJE (ANA-MPA) -- Protesting tobacco producers from the southwestern part of the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (fYRoM) on Wednesday set up a blockade on the Medzitlija / Niki border crossing that connects Bitola with Florina, in protest over what they claim are low prices offered by tobacco dealers in the landlocked former Yugoslav republic.

The protestors, who closed-off the border crossing at noon (10.00 GMT), said they intended to keep it closed until 7 p.m.

    [02] Turkey visit criticised

Communist Party of Greece (KKE) Secretary General Aleka Papariga on Wednesday lashed out at Prime Minister George Papandreou accusing him of putting the countryās sovereign rights second, in order to proceed with a joint exploitation of the Aegean and ensure profits for big companies.

Papariga expressed concern as regards the PMās visit to Turkey following an invitation by Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan to address the Turkish ambassadorsā conference session in Erzurum on Friday.

"The PMās visit to Erzurum seals the agreement between Greece and Turkey on the Aegean," Papariga said, adding that "developments are already underway".

    [03] Transports policy bashed

(ANA-MPA) -- Coalition of the Radical Left (SYRIZA) parliamentary group leader Alexis Tsipras launched a sharp attack against the government's policy on public transports, after a meeting on Wednesday with representatives of the public transport employees' Coordinating Committee.

Tsipras accused the government of having decided to break up public urban transport and "shrink" their activity, while at the same time increasing ticket prices by 40-50 percent, so as to enable private concerns to profiteer and thus sinking the economy and sidelining the employees without any concern for the "unbelievable consequences and effects this will have on the social fabric". (ANA-MPA)

The SYRIZA parliamentary alliance leader said that public transports are subsides "in all the civilised countries of the western world", whereas in Greece "our governments opt to subsidise only the private transports, pushing urban transports to borrowing that has accumulated endless debts". (ANA-MPA)

Now, he added, they're putting the burden on the employees and the passengers. (ANA-MPA)

Tsipras assured the employees that SYRIZA will wage the battle "to link the struggle of the working people with the social movements demanding justice and civilisation, because transports are an indicator of our civilisation". (ANA-MPA)
